“Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness. May he judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice.” (Ps. 72: 1-2).
Praying for our leaders is a divine calling. In 1 Tim. 2:1-2 the Bible commands that we pray for our leaders; the president of the country the premier, the mayor of the city, and institutions that have a fundamental function of leadership e.g., parliament, the synod etc.
We are called to pray for the Archbishop, the Bishop, the Archdeacon, the Rector and our priests. We must pray for every leader in our community, in our families, at our workplace. Those in the corporate world and the civil service as well as civil societies. We must pray for all leaders. We must pray that God endows them with wisdom so that they may lead with justice and with God’s righteousness.
David prays for his son, Solomon in this psalm, that his reign may be “like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the earth.”
(Ps. 72:6).
Have you ever sat on the patio when it’s raining or even watched it rain through your window? Do you remember the soothing sound it makes as it journeys from the heavens and as it hits the cracked dry earth? Picture that for a moment! That is how the people ought to experience God’s love – soothing showers of justice, fairness and love, like the rain falling on a mown field.
Let’s pray.
O Lord, we pray for our leaders this Monday and throughout the week, that they may lead with humility, compassion and love. We pray that the people they are leading, will experience God’s righteousness, justice, peace and tranquility through them; and in particular, we pray for those on the margins who are often forgotten – the poor, the afflicted, the orphans, the widows, and the strangers; those that Christ came for.
O Lord, God; may your wisdom flow through our leaders like the rain falling on a mown field; like showers watering the earth, we pray that the Holy Spirit may shower our leaders everywhere with the spirit of justice and compassion ; our national leaders, those who lead in our provinces, our cities, our diocese, and our parishes. We pray that our people will find justice and peace and prosperity in our great land, we pray through our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.
