The Diocese of Johannesburg celebrated a historic moment on 22nd February, 2026 on the auspicious occasion of the installation of Rev. Canon Dr. Sepadi Moruthane as the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Johannesburg. The consecration and installation service was held at the Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin, Johannesburg. The ceremony was conducted by the Archbishop of Cape Town and the Metropolitan of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa (ACSA) the Most Rev. Dr. Thabo Makgoba. It was graced by over 25 bishops, which included representatives of the Catholic Church and the Episcopal Church, among others.
The ceremony marked the formal assumption of leadership of the Diocese by Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Canon Sepadi Moruthane. This long-awaited occasion was also attended by many clergy, laity, and civic guests including former President of South Africa, Kgalema Motlanthe, and the Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Dada Morero, who all came to witness this solemn and joyous occasion.
The atmosphere was vibrant and often punctuated by spontaneous singing, dancing and ululation! It was truly a sight to behold. The Holy Spirit filled the hearts of all who congregated to witness this joyous occasion and prayed with and for the new Bishop. We asked God to guide and protect Rt. Rev. Dr. Canon Sepadi Moruthane as he leads his flock in unity and faith into greater heights.
In his acceptance speech, Bishop Sepadi movingly invited all those present to join him in his vision for the Diocese, drawing on a beloved Sunday school rhyme that has stayed with him since childhood, Building up the Temple of the Lord. It was a deeply personal and spiritually resonant moment that set the tone for his leadership: collaborative, rooted in faith, and anchored in community.
Dr. Sepadi’s appointment signals a renewed spiritual direction for the Anglican community in Johannesburg, ushering in a new chapter of service and pastoral leadership. May the Almighty God direct his footsteps as he leads the Diocese of Johannesburg. Amen!

Building up the temple of the Lord,
Brother, won’t you help me,
Sister, won’t you help me,
Mother, won’t you help me,
Father, won’t you help me…
Building up the temple of the Lord.
