Rector’s Reflection

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ

What does Thanksgiving mean to you?

For me, it’s about making space to bless the Lord and give thanks for all His many gifts to us. A colleague once wisely said, “Noticing our blessings and giving thanks is an important ‘soul muscle’ for us to strengthen.” I’ve found that offering words of gratitude to God even before getting out of bed, can truly transform the way our day unfolds. The same is true at night: bedtime provides a beautiful opportunity to reflect on the day and to thank God, our Good Shepherd, who watches over us.

In our country today, it may feel less natural to give thanks in a time of political division and uncertainty. But even in seasons like these, it is still right and fitting to give thanks to God and to trust His plan even when the road ahead seems unclear. As we do, we may find that we emerge stronger, wiser, and more grounded in faith than we were before.

Every year on the 3rd of August, we celebrate and give thanks for our Patron Saint Stephen, after whom our church is named. Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr, holds a powerful place in our faith history. His life and courageous witness continue to inspire believers around the world. Fueled by the Holy Spirit, Stephen preached boldly to both Jews and Gentiles, fearlessly confronted opposition, and used his deep knowledge of Scripture to testify to the divinity of Christ. He performed great miracles, glorifying God and leading many to faith in Jesus. And even in the face of persecution, Stephen’s commitment to Christ never wavered.

As a parish, we have so much to be thankful for. Our Patronal Festival gives us a special opportunity to pause and give thanks to God for the many ways our community is thriving, especially for our diverse and faithful congregation. I am also deeply thankful for the wonderful staff and lay leaders at St Stephen’s. I regularly thank God for leading me here. It is truly a blessing to serve in this unique and vibrant parish, and I give thanks to God and to all of you for that gift.

May each day of our lives be enlightened by the example and teachings of Saint Stephen. Let us never cease to give thanks for all that God has given us. May we see with increasing clarity the hand of God at work in and around us. And may we faithfully respond, asking God to help us be faithful stewards of His great bounty and for the provision of all who are in need.

Wishing you all a joyful and blessed St. Stephen’s Day.
