Little Tots and Happy Hearts

In 2 Corinthians 9:7 it reads: Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

So on the evening of 6 June 2025, members of St Stephen’s Sunninghill gathered inside the coffee shop for a different kind of fellowship and cheerful giving. The room was filled with cheer as congregants laboured away, chopping vegetables and preparing other foods that would be served at orphanage and childcare centre, Ratang Bana, in Alexander township, the following day.

On the morning of 7 June 2025, the St Stephen’s Social Outreach team in partnership with the Young Adults of St Stephen’s (YASS), visited Ratang Bana, to serve a meal made with love to more than 100 children.

“It was amazing, it was life-changing because it’s very humbling to see how the kids are very appreciative of just a meal, when we as the average South African take that for granted”, said Mashudu Matshavha.

“They say God is found in the presence of children, children are pure souls and are just happy with life”, he continued.

The children’s happiness was pulpable, as they sang at the top of their voices. Members of YASS also facilitated games that were self-affirming for the children and were enjoyed by all.

Lusanda Mncwabe, from YASS, said of the experience, “The warmth and joy of the children, especially when they sang, touched my heart deeply. Their gratitude and smiles left a lasting impression and imprinted Galatians 6:9-10 in my heart”.

Galatians 6:9-10 reads: Encourage believers to persevere in doing good, promising a harvest of blessings in due time and to seize opportunities to do good to all, especially to those in the family of faith.

While Monique Smith said, “Spending time with the children at Ratang Bana reminded me that investing in their future is not just a moral imperative but a societal responsibility. Seeing the world through their eyes, even if it’s only for a day, was a
powerful reminder of the importance of kindness, compassion and community”.

The party packs served after the main meal were a hit for the little ones as each child got to enjoy a variety of chips and sweets.

This was the second of four servings that happen at Ratang Bana annually. If you would like to join the next one taking place in September, please reach out to Finess Chinganya or members of the YASS Christians in Action (CIA) team.

YASS would also like to thank each and every person who volunteered their time and made donations towards making this day a success. May the good Lord bless you and keep you.
